The Danish EV market in 2026
Denmark is one of Europe’s most mature EV markets. Battery-electric cars make up about 40% of new car sales (2025 figure), fourth in Europe after Norway, Iceland and Sweden. Drivers are propelled by registration tax breaks (BEVs pay roughly half the registration tax of a comparable ICE), aggressive municipal kerbside rollout in Copenhagen and Aarhus, and a heavily renewable electricity grid (over 70% wind + solar share).
About 240,000 BEVs and 90,000 PHEVs are on the road. Today there are about 25,000 publicly accessible points, broken down as:
- 20,600 AC chargers (Type 2, 3-22 kW)
- 3,500 DC fast chargers (50-150 kW)
- 900 ultra-rapid HPC (150-350 kW)
- A handful of hydrogen stations (small network)
Where the network is densest
Denmark is geographically compact: Copenhagen to the German border is 350 km direct. Coverage tiers:
- Tier 1 (densest): Copenhagen + Greater Sjaelland, Aarhus, Odense, the E45 corridor (Aalborg-Padborg) and E20 (Copenhagen-Esbjerg). Average 25-45 km between HPC sites.
- Tier 2 (good): Aalborg, Esbjerg, Kolding, Vejle, Roskilde, smaller motorways. Average 40-70 km between HPC.
- Tier 3 (thinner but adequate): West coast of Jutland, small islands (Bornholm, Fanoe, Aero, Laesoe). 60-100 km between fast chargers but always present.
For visitors: any Danish trip is EV-trivial. The country is small and the network is dense.

| Spirii | 5,000+ | AC kerbside + DC | 3.50 AC, 4.90 DC |
| E.ON Drive | 3,500+ | AC + DC + HPC | 3.90 AC, 5.50 DC |

| Tesla Supercharger | 40+ | CCS (open to non-Tesla) | 4.50-5.50 (non-Tesla) |
| Ionity | 18+ | Ultra-rapid CCS | 5.90 (no subscription) |
| Powerdot | 800+ | DC at retail parks | 4.50-5.50 |
Clever is the dominant national CPO, owned by a consortium of Danish utilities. Spirii specialises in urban kerbside. E.ON Drive integrates with the German E.ON network. OK operates the petrol-station HPC backbone.
Payment methods
Four routes, all valid:
- Contactless credit/debit card at the terminal. Mandatory under EU AFIR on every new charger above 50 kW.
- Operator app: Clever, Spirii, E.ON Drive, Tesla, OK. Live availability + payment + history.
- Roaming RFID card: EnBW mobility+, Plugsurfing, Shell Recharge, Chargemap Pass, Octopus Electroverse.
- Ad-hoc QR code: scan, pay via webform. About DKK 0.50-1.00/kWh more than app pricing.
For a visit, the simplest combo is your home roaming card (EnBW mobility+ for German visitors, Octopus Electroverse for UK visitors) plus contactless credit card as backup. Add the free Clever app for the largest national network.
Cost: EV vs ICE in Denmark
Comparison for a typical 350 km trip in a Hyundai IONIQ 5 (78 kWh battery, real-world 19 kWh/100km) vs a comparable petrol crossover (real-world 7.5 l/100km at DKK 14/litre):
| Charging strategy | Energy needed | Cost (DKK) | Cost (EUR) | Per km (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home overnight (off-peak DKK 2.00) | 67 kWh | 134.00 | 17.99 | 0.051 |
| AC kerbside Clever (DKK 3.50) | 67 kWh | 234.50 | 31.48 | 0.090 |
| DC fast 80% of charge (DKK 4.90) | 53.6 kWh | 262.64 | 35.26 | 0.101 |
| HPC Ionity (DKK 5.90) | 67 kWh | 395.30 | 53.06 | 0.152 |
| Tesla SC non-Tesla (DKK 5.00) | 67 kWh | 335.00 | 44.97 | 0.128 |
| Petrol (DKK 14/l) | 26 l | 364.00 | 48.86 | 0.140 |
At those figures: even using ultra-rapid charging exclusively, the BEV is roughly cost-neutral with petrol; with home or DC charging the BEV is 2-3x cheaper per km.
The tariffs and the pump price in this table are the figures reviewed on 2026-05-30; both move, so read the ranking rather than the absolute amounts.

Practical tips for visiting EV drivers
- Install Clever + Tesla + EnBW mobility+ before crossing the border. Together these cover 95% of Danish HPC sites.
- Use A Better Route Planner (ABRP) or Google Maps EV routing for any cross-border trip.
- Bring your own Type 2 cable for AC kerbside and hotel charging.
- Contactless credit card is your fallback at every newer station (EU AFIR mandate, in force since 2024).
- Danish electricity is moderate; if your hotel has an AC charger, use it overnight.
- Copenhagen LEZ (Miljozone) restricts older diesel; BEVs always allowed.
- Tesla Superchargers are open to all CCS2 cars in Denmark since 2022.
