Miljozone since 2007 in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Aalborg, Frederiksberg. Trucks and buses only restricted (Euro 5+ required). Cars NOT affected unlike Sweden. Enforcement: ANPR cameras via Miljozone.dk registration.

Miljozone since 2007: trucks only, cars free
Denmark introduced its first low emission zone (Miljozone) in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg on 1 September 2007, then extended to Aarhus (2010), Odense (2011), and Aalborg (2011). In 2020, all five zones were harmonized and expanded.
Key difference from Sweden and Germany: Danish LEZ only apply to trucks (over 3.5t) and buses. Passenger cars, vans under 3.5t, and motorcycles have no LEZ restrictions. This is because:
- Danish cities are compact and largely bike-based (Copenhagen 45% bike commuting)
- Air quality problems primarily from diesel trucks and buses, not passenger cars
- Political consensus favors non-restrictive approach for private drivers
The 5 Danish LEZ cities
| City | LEZ boundary | Vehicles affected |
|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen | Inner city + Frederiksberg | Trucks/buses over 3.5t |
| Aarhus | Ring road area | Trucks/buses over 3.5t |
| Odense | Central Odense | Trucks/buses over 3.5t |
| Aalborg | Inner city | Trucks/buses over 3.5t |
| Frederiksberg | Municipality (part of Copenhagen metro) | Trucks/buses over 3.5t |
Signage: white square with “MILJOZONE” text and city name. Entry points signposted.
Requirements for trucks and buses
Euro standard: Minimum Euro 5 (from 1 July 2020) for entry. Vehicles that don’t meet Euro 5 natively can qualify with:
- Retrofit particulate filter (DPF)
- SCR/AdBlue system for NOx reduction
- Combined systems for full Euro 5-equivalence
Registration: All commercial vehicles must be registered on Miljozone.dk before entering LEZ. Free for compliant vehicles. Digital: ANPR cameras verify plate against database in real-time.
Fines: 5000-15000 DKK (€670-2000) for entering with non-compliant vehicle. Enforcement via camera + verification of Miljozone.dk registration.
Cars: no restrictions in Denmark
For passenger drivers this is excellent news: you can drive any car (any Euro standard, any fuel type, any age) into any Danish city. No sticker required, no registration needed. This contrasts with:
- Sweden Miljözon Klass 1: bans diesel Euro 5 in Stockholm Hornsgatan
- Germany Umweltzone: bans older diesel/petrol in 65 cities with sticker system
- France Crit’Air: mandatory ZFE sticker in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, etc.
- Netherlands Milieuzone: bans older diesel in 15 cities
Denmark’s approach shows a different philosophy: infrastructure-first (bike lanes, metro expansion) rather than restriction-first.
Toll bridges: not LEZ but bridge tolls
Danish drivers pay tolls on 3 major bridges (car costs):
- Great Belt Bridge (Storebælt): 235 DKK (€31) each way
- Oresund Bridge (to Sweden): 470 DKK (€70) each way
- Fehmarnbelt Tunnel (opens 2029): TBD, expected ~€40-50
Foreign vehicles: automatic ANPR toll, invoice sent to home address via Epass24 or Storebaelt.dk within 2-4 months. Payment via card or bank transfer.
No congestion charge
Denmark has considered but rejected congestion pricing:
- 2012: Copenhagen proposed congestion charge, withdrawn due to political opposition
- 2020: Reintroduced in political debate, no consensus
- 2024: Aarhus considering trial (pilot only)
For now, no Danish city has active congestion charging. All road access to Copenhagen inner city is free (unlike Stockholm 45 DKK/passage).
Copenhagen future: EU 2035 ban
Denmark aligned with EU 2035 combustion engine ban:
- 2026-2028: Possible Copenhagen restrictions on Euro 4 diesel passenger cars in inner city
- 2030: Copenhagen goal: 30% electric vehicle share in vehicle fleet
- 2035: EU-wide ban on new combustion engine sales
- 2040: Copenhagen targeting carbon-neutral inner city
Practical advice
1. Rental cars: no LEZ concerns for private drivers
Rent any car in Denmark - no restrictions apply to passenger vehicles. Diesel, petrol, hybrid, EV all welcome anywhere.
2. Truck/RV drivers: register on Miljozone.dk
If your motorhome exceeds 3.5t (rare but possible for large American RVs), register on Miljozone.dk. Otherwise most European motorhomes fall under 3.5t.
3. EV benefits
Danish EVs enjoy:
- Registration tax exemption until 2030 (large financial benefit)
- Free parking in central Copenhagen for EV
- Free public charging at some municipalities
- Free ferry passage on some routes
4. Diesel drivers: consider ferry
If you have older diesel and want to visit Copenhagen: no problem within city. If uncertain, use Puttgarden ferry to reach Rødby and drive north.
