Greece getting around – requirements

Drivers license

  • Often the driver must have been in possession of the driving license for at least 1 year. This can also be three years, depending on the type of vehicle.

  • The driver often has to be at least 21 years old.
  • Sometimes the age limit is lower or higher depending on the rental company or the type of vehicle.
  • Drivers under the age of 23 sometimes have to pay a young driver surcharge.
  • Insurance is often more expensive for younger drivers.
  • Keep in mind that there may be a maximum age of, for example, 75 years or sometimes even 72 or 69 years.

  • A car can only be rented with a credit card (with pin code) in the name of the main driver. Cash is rarely accepted as a deposit.
  • Debit cards (debit cards, debit cards), prepaid cards, rechargeable or virtual credit cards or other payment cards with no numbers and letters stamped (tactile embossing) are usually not accepted.

Greece getting around – rent a scooter or motorbike

  • When renting a scooter, be careful not to rent a souped-up moped, as this may be a motorcycle by law and if you don’t have a motorcycle license, you may not be insured.
  • Motorcycles are also available for rent in Greece. Rental companies must have a badge from the Greek National Tourism Board which guarantees that the motorcycles have been inspected for safety and the noise they produce and are insured.
