North Finland (Oulu, Kemi, Rovaniemi)
Subarctic. Summer 14-19C, winter -10 to -20C. 500-650 mm precipitation, much as snow.
Lapland (Sodankyla, Inari, Utsjoki)

Winter driving in Finland
Finland is one of the most experienced winter-driving cultures in the world:
- Winter tyres mandatory 1 Nov-31 Mar.
- Studded tyres allowed 1 Nov-31 Mar.
- Headlights on always: legal year-round.
- Reflective vest at roadside: not legally required but smart.
- Snow chains: rarely needed (flat terrain); only Lapland mountain crossings.
- Engine block heater: standard on Finnish cars; plug in below -15C.
Elk and reindeer driving hazards
Finland has thousands of large-mammal collisions per year. Mitigation:
- Elk warning zones: brown elk pictogram on E4, E18, E63, E75, Highway 4 to Lapland.
- Reduce speed to 70 km/h or below in zones, especially dawn/dusk.
- Reindeer in Lapland: not fenced, herded by Sami; year-round risk.
- Insurance: covered by most Finnish car insurance.
- If collision unavoidable: brake hard, stay in lane, do not swerve into oncoming.
Polar night and midnight sun
Above the Arctic Circle:
- Polar night (kaamos): mid-Dec to early Jan in Rovaniemi; longer further north.
- Midnight sun: late May to late July; 24h sun above Arctic Circle.
- Civil twilight: 2-4 hours of dim usable light even in deep polar night.
- Aurora: best Sep-Mar with clear skies; visible from Rovaniemi north.
Practical: headlights always on in polar night, plan rest stops, keep fuel topped up.
