Germany transport – Getting around in Germany

Whether you go with your own car, rent a car, or go by plane, here you will find all practical information about transport in Germany.

    Car hire

    Rental locations

Cars can be rented anywhere, including at airports and stations and in cities.

    Rental car booking

The rates can vary greatly per season and per provider. Booking in advance can be cheaper at carhirecompany.com

    Requirements

    • To rent a car in Germany, the driver must have a valid driver’s license.
    • Often the driver must have been in possession of the driving license for at least 1 year. This can also be 2 or 3 years, depending on the type of vehicle.

    Age

    • The driver must often be at least 21 years old.
    • Sometimes the age limit is lower or higher depending on the rental company or the type of vehicle.
    • Drivers younger than 21 or 23 often have to pay a young driver’s allowance.
    • Sometimes the insurance is more expensive for young drivers.
    • Please note that a maximum age may apply.

    Guarantee

A car can only be rented with a credit card (with pin code) in the name of the main driver. Cash is rarely accepted as a deposit.

    Particularities

Check in the winter whether the rental car is equipped with the right winter equipment. The use of winter tires is mandatory in winter conditions. In mountainous areas, snow chains can be made mandatory with a sign.

    Environmental sticker

Many German city centers are only accessible with an environmental sticker. Cars hired in Germany usually have such an environmental sticker, but rental cars registered in another country usually do not.
