How the German traffic information system works

Germany has a layered traffic information infrastructure. At federal level, the Bundesanstalt fur Strassenwesen (BASt) coordinates research and standards. The day-to-day operation of the 13,200 km autobahn network is the responsibility of the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, since 2021 a single federal operator that replaced the 16 separate state motorway authorities. Bundesstrasse and city roads remain with state and municipal authorities.

The Autobahn GmbH operates the autobahn.app and the autobahn.de portal with live data on:

• All current Sperrungen (closures)
• Active and planned Baustellen (roadworks)
• Stau and slow-moving traffic (Stockend, Stau)
• Parking availability at Raststatten (LKW + PKW)
• Webcams every 5-15 km on busy corridors
• Variable message sign indications

Each of the 16 states also operates a Verkehrsinformationszentrale (VIZ) for state roads, fed by ~5,000 induction loop sensors, ~700 cameras and police reports.

The worst stau corridors

Based on the ADAC Staubilanz 2024 (859.000 km cumulative stau length from 516,000 traffic jams and 448,000 hours of standstill; record +5% vs 2023). Click any corridor for a dedicated live traffic map, peak-hour forecast, incident pattern and alternative routes.

The A45 was partially closed for 4 years (2021-2025) because of the Rahmedetal bridge demolition and rebuild. It is fully open again as of late 2025 but A45 traffic remains volatile because of the surrounding tunnel and bridge refurbishments.

Stau triggers

Five common causes:

1. Rush hour (Berufsverkehr): 07:00-09:00 morning, 16:00-19:00 evening
2. Friday afternoon and Sunday evening: weekend exodus and return
3. School holidays: especially Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg with parallel holidays (Pfingsten, Sommerferien, Herbstferien)
4. Major construction: A40 bridge, A45 Sauerland, A66 Frankfurt, A1 Leverkusen bridge
5. Accidents and weather: especially on the A8 over the Albaufstieg (Stuttgart-Munich) in snow

Friday peaks coincide with the start of long weekends and school holidays. The notorious Reisestauwochenende each July sees 1,200+ km cumulative stau across the southern axis A5 + A8 + A7 + A9.

The autobahn.app

Truck driving bans and their indirect effects on car traffic

The federal Sonn- und Feiertagsfahrverbot bans trucks over 7.5 t on autobahns and Bundesstrassen every Sunday and holiday 00:00-22:00. The visible effect for cars:

• Sunday daytime is the most relaxed driving window on long-distance routes. Trucks are off the road, car-only flow.
• Sunday 20:00-23:00 the trucks come back: drivers waiting in laybys nationwide all re-enter the autobahn at the same time. Mild surge.
• Saturday summer bans (Jul-Aug) on A3, A7, A8, A93, A99: even better Saturday driving than usual.
• Holiday “Bruckentag” Mondays: trucks resume immediately, so the holiday weekend ends with a heavy Monday morning surge.

For touring drivers, planning long autobahn legs for Sunday 10:00-18:00 typically delivers the best free-flow experience.

State-level traffic portals

Variable speed limits

About 2,500 km of Streckenbeeinflussungsanlagen show variable speed limits on the busiest sections. The full network covers:

• A40 Duisburg-Bochum-Dortmund (Ruhrgebiet)
• A99 Munich (entire ring)
• A2 Hannover, A7 Hamburg approaches
• A5 Frankfurt-Karlsruhe (Rhine corridor)
• A8 Stuttgart-Karlsruhe and Stuttgart-Munich
• A81 Stuttgart-Heilbronn
• A3 Cologne-Frankfurt
• A4 Cologne-Dresden
• A10 Berlin ring

The displayed limit can be 60, 80, 100, 120 or 130 km/h depending on conditions. Speed cameras enforce it. Display reasons:

• Congestion warning (lower limit smooths flow)
• Wet conditions (reduce hydroplaning risk)
• Accident or stau ahead (slow approach)
• Fog or snow detected by roadside sensors

Foreign visitors often miss these: the sign is the same orange-on-blue Autobahn sign but the limit changes. Always look at the LED panel.

Rettungsgasse and emergency access

The Rettungsgasse is mandatory whenever autobahn traffic slows or stops. The rule:

• 2-lane autobahn: left lane to the left, right lane to the right, gap in between
• 3-lane autobahn: left lane to the left, middle and right lanes to the right, gap between left and middle
• 4+ lane autobahn: same pattern, gap between leftmost lane and next

Form the Rettungsgasse before emergency vehicles arrive, not when they appear. Failure to form one or driving through the Rettungsgasse: €200 to €320 fine + 2 points + 1-month licence ban. Fines were sharply increased in 2020 (28. Verordnung zur Änderung der StVO) from €20 to this tiered scale.

The Rettungsgasse also applies on multi-lane Bundesstrassen and city-bound dual carriageways above 4 lanes.

Truck driving bans (Sonn- und Feiertagsfahrverbot)

Trucks over 7.5 t and tractor-trailers are banned from German autobahns and Bundesstrassen:

• Sundays 00:00-22:00
• Federal holidays 00:00-22:00
• Selected summer Saturdays (1 July to 31 August) on routes: A3 Frankfurt-Wurzburg, A7 Hamburg-Bavaria, A8 Karlsruhe-Salzburg, A93 Inntal, A99 Munich south

This reduces summer holiday stau significantly. Empty trucks for return and certain exempt goods (perishables, livestock, ambulance support) can still drive.

Major projects affecting 2026 traffic

• A1 Leverkusen Rhine Bridge: new structure under construction, single-lane on the existing bridge, 80 km/h, until 2027
• A45 Sauerland: all 18 bridges renewal complete 2025, some sections still single-lane
• A100 Berlin Eastern extension: 16th Bauabschnitt under construction, intermittent A100/A113 closures weekends
• A40 Duisburg Rhein bridge: planned reconstruction starts 2026, expect 5+ years of disruption
• A66 Frankfurt eastern bypass: ongoing tunnels and bridges to 2028

Practical tips

• Start long autobahn journeys before 06:00 or after 21:00 to avoid rush
• Check autobahn.app the night before for planned weekend closures
• Carry water and snacks: stau can mean 1-3 hours in place
• Keep an eye on the LED variable-message signs even on familiar routes
• In stau, immediately form the Rettungsgasse, even before sirens
• For weather-triggered closures (snow, fog), monitor Germany weather
