Federal traffic operator: Autobahn GmbH des Bundes
Since 2021, all 13,200 km of German autobahn fall under a single federal operator: the Autobahn GmbH des Bundes. It replaced the 16 separate state motorway authorities (Landesbetriebe Strassenbau). The reorganisation centralised operations, maintenance, tolling (LKW-Maut) and information services.
The Autobahn GmbH runs the autobahn.app and the autobahn.de portal, with:
- Live map (refreshed every 5 minutes) coloured by congestion
- Webcam access at ~700 sites
- Live parking availability at Raststatten and Autohofe
- Active and planned closures and roadworks (Baustellen)
- Variable message sign indications
The Bundesstrassen network (39,000 km of federal trunk roads not part of the autobahn) remains with the 16 states, each operating its own Strassenbauverwaltung and Verkehrsinformationszentrale (VIZ).
Holiday and weekend stau predictions
The ADAC publishes a yearly Stauprognose calendar showing the worst-affected weekends:
- Pfingstwochenende (Whitsun): late May/early June. A1, A2, A5, A8.
- Sommerferien start: Bavarian and Baden-Wurttemberg holidays end of July/early August. Catastrophic on A99/A8/A93.
- Sommerferien end: returns mid-August to early September. A7 Hamburg, A8 westbound.
- Herbstferien: autumn break, mid-October. Manageable but heavy on A2.
- Christmas + New Year week: A3, A5, A8 over the Alps.
- Karfreitag (Good Friday): south-bound A5, A7, A8.
The ADAC also produces a Reisetag-by-Reisetag map showing where to expect stau on each day of the German school holiday season.

Which autobahns are most affected?
Germany has ten autobahn corridors that show up in every annual ADAC traffic report. The table below summarises typical summer load:
| Autobahn | Route | Summer congestion risk | Best travel time |
|---|---|---|---|
| A8 | Karlsruhe-Salzburg | Very high (Alps gateway, holiday corridor) | Nights or Tuesday-Thursday |
| A7 | Hamburg-Wuerzburg-Fuessen | Very high (longest north-south route) | Before 06:00 or after 22:00 |
| A2 | Hannover-Berlin / Dortmund | High (east-west truck corridor) | Sundays before 16:00 |
| A3 | Cologne-Frankfurt-Nuremberg | High (Rhine corridor, dense industry) | Weekday mornings |
| A1 | Hamburg-Bremen-Cologne | High (Hanseatic corridor, Leverkusen bridge) | Tuesday-Thursday |
| A5 | Frankfurt-Karlsruhe-Basel | High (Switzerland approach) | Outside school holidays |
| A9 | Berlin-Munich | High (Eastern travel artery) | Weekdays early |
| A99 | Munich ring road | Stop-and-go daily | Off rush hour |
| A40 | Ruhrgebiet | Densest urban motorway in Europe | Sundays |
| A45 | Hagen-Aschaffenburg (Sauerlandlinie) | Volatile (bridge reconstructions to 2027) | Check autobahn.app |
A8, A7, A2 and A5 together account for over 40% of all annual stau kilometres in Germany.
The Reisestauwochenenden of 2026
Each summer ADAC publishes the worst forecast weekends. For 2026 the headline dates:
- 27-28 June 2026: start of Berlin, Brandenburg, Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein summer holidays
- 4-5 July 2026: Mecklenburg-Vorpommern join, plus Italian, Polish and Swedish overlap
- 11-12 July 2026: Lower Saxony, Bremen, NRW (the giant) start
- 18-19 July 2026: Hessen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland join. The notorious “Reisestauwochenende” with three southern states peaking
- 25-26 July 2026: Baden-Wuerttemberg + Bavaria start (the southern ferry of holidaymakers)
- 1-2 August 2026: ADAC’s predicted worst weekend nationwide. 2,000+ km of cumulative stau expected
The German staggered holiday calendar is set by the standing conference of education ministers (KMK) and rotates yearly to spread the load. Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg stay last because of grape harvest tradition.
Bundesstrassen as autobahn alternatives
Where an autobahn jam exceeds 2 hours, the parallel Bundesstrasse becomes a real option. Some classic alternatives:
- A7 jam in Lower Saxony: use B4 / B214 through Celle and Wolfsburg
- A3 Cologne-Frankfurt blocked: use B42 / B260 along the Rhine east bank
- A2 Hannover-Berlin congested: use B188 / B189 through Magdeburg
- A8 Albaufstieg closed: use B312 / B466 through the Schwaebische Alb
- A9 Berlin-Leipzig jam: use B2 / B100 through Wittenberg
Bundesstrassen are toll-free, 100 km/h speed limit, and pass through villages. Add 30-60% to the journey time on autobahn-distance.
Winter season chokepoints
Different sections become problematic in winter:
- A8 Albaufstieg (Stuttgart-Ulm): truck pile-ups in snow, multi-day closures possible
- A93 Inntal: Brenner approach, snow-chain mandatory in storms
- A99 Munich south: drifts on the Allgaeu side
- A95 Munich-Garmisch: ski-traffic chokepoint on Saturdays Jan-Mar
- A4 Erzgebirge: black ice on bridges, rapid temperature drops
- Bayerische Alpenstrasse (B305): closes Nov-May north of Berchtesgaden
The DWD severe weather warning + autobahn.app combination gives the best picture.
Tunnels with special rules
Notable German autobahn tunnels:
- Elbtunnel (A7 Hamburg): 3.3 km, 8 lanes in 4 bores, no lorries over 7.5 t during rush hour. At its 1975 opening Europe’s longest underwater motorway tunnel, built with the world’s then-largest tunnel-boring machine ‘Trude’.
- Aubing Tunnel (A99 Munich ring): 1,956 m, Bavaria’s longest motorway tunnel; plus Allach Tunnel (1,100 m)
- Berg Bock Tunnel (A71 Thuringia): 2.7 km, full lighting, no hazmat
- Rennsteigtunnel (A71 Thuringia): 7,916 m, Germany’s longest motorway tunnel (opened 2003), 80 km/h, two bores with cross-passages every 300 m
All German autobahn tunnels are <2 km use signed limits 80-100 km/h. Tunnel signs (round blue with white tunnel pictogram) appear 200 m before entry. Hazmat lorries follow separate routing.
HGV restrictions in detail
The Sonn- und Feiertagsfahrverbot bans trucks over 7.5 t on every autobahn and Bundesstrasse:
- Sundays 00:00-22:00: all federal roads
- Federal holidays 00:00-22:00: all federal roads
- 1 July to 31 August, every Saturday 07:00-20:00 (Ferienreiseverordnung): on selected autobahn sections including A3 (Frankfurt-Wuerzburg), A7 (Hamburg-Bavaria), A8 (Karlsruhe-Salzburg), A93 (Inntal), A99 (Munich south)
Penalty: €500 for the driver + €1,500 for the haulier. Police checkpoints on entry to the banned sections.
Exceptions: perishable goods (fish, fresh meat, fresh milk), livestock, emergency support vehicles, ambulance backup, and listed humanitarian transports.
Major project announcements
The federal Bundesverkehrswegeplan 2030 schedules major works. Some currently in progress or upcoming:
- A1 Leverkusen Rhine Bridge: new structure, single-lane existing bridge until 2027
- A45 Sauerland: 18 bridges renewed by 2025, ongoing tunnel work
- A100 Berlin Eastern: 16th Bauabschnitt to 2027, intermittent A100/A113 closures
- A40 Duisburg Rhein: rebuild start 2026, 5+ years
- A66 Frankfurt eastern bypass: tunnels and bridges to 2028
- A14 Magdeburg-Stendal-Schwerin: new construction in progress
- A20 Bremerhaven-Wilhelmshaven-Hamburg-Lubeck-Stettin: contentious, partial construction
- A39 Wolfsburg-Luneburg: new route, planned
Use autobahn.app’s 30-day calendar to plan around weekend works on your route.
Traffic data integration
The German autobahn data feed is open under specific licenses and integrates into commercial apps:
- Google Maps: full integration of stau, closures and limits
- Waze: full integration plus community real-time reports
- Apple Maps: integrated but slower at reflecting closures
- TomTom GO Navigation: subscription, full real-time
- HERE WeGo: full data, in-car systems
- ADAC Drive: own data + autobahn.app feed
For specialised use:
- Trucker apps (Trucker, Sygic Truck): include weight restrictions and Sondermaut info
- EV route planners (ABRP): incorporate charging stations along the route
- Camper apps (campercontact, park4night): parking and overnight info
Special traffic info: trucks
The Sonn- und Feiertagsfahrverbot bans trucks over 7.5 t on Sundays and federal holidays; the Ferienreiseverordnung adds every Saturday 1 July-31 August from 07:00 to 20:00 on selected autobahn sections. This applies to:
- All autobahns (13,200 km)
- All Bundesstrassen (39,000 km)
- Time: 00:00-22:00 on each banned day
Exceptions: perishable goods, livestock, fuel deliveries to emergency services, and a list of permitted goods.
This federal ban reduces truck volume significantly Sunday-Monday morning and explains why Sunday afternoon travel is usually less congested than Friday.
Practical planning tips
- Check autobahn.app the night before long Friday or Sunday trips
- Avoid Bavarian holiday weekends by checking the holiday calendar (ADAC + autobahn.de)
- For long autobahn drives, start before 06:00 or after 21:00
- Use Bundesstrasse alternatives when autobahn closes (autobahn.app suggests them)
- Carry water, snacks and a paper map for stau preparedness
- Follow ADAC, autobahn.app and local VIZ on Twitter/X for breaking news
