How Hungarian road signs work
Hungary is a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals (1968), the same framework used by Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Romania and most European countries. As a result, about 90% of Hungarian signs look identical to those in neighbouring countries.
Hungarian traffic signs are codified in KRESZ (Kozuti Kozlekedes Szabalyai), the Highway Code, first issued in 1975 (decree 1/1975 KPM-BM) and updated regularly. KRESZ organises signs into functional groups:
- Veszelyt jelzo tablak (warning signs): red equilateral triangle, apex up
- Elsobbseget szabalyozo tablak (priority signs): specific shapes per priority rule
- Tilalmi jelzotablak (prohibition signs): red circle
- Utasito jelzotablak (mandatory signs): blue circle
- Utbaigazito tablak (direction signs): blue rectangle for main roads, green for motorways
- Tajekoztato tablak (information signs): blue rectangle
- Kiegeszito tablak (auxiliary panels): small extra panels beneath the main sign
Hungarian-specific text is in Hungarian, but symbols follow the Vienna Convention standard.

Direction and information signs
Motorway direction signs (autopalya)
Green rectangular signs with white text. Key items:
- Autopalya kezdete: motorway start
- Autopalya vege: motorway end
- Autopalya kijarat: motorway exit (500 metres, then 250 metres, then at exit)
- Pihenohely: rest area (indicated 2 km before)
- Uzemanyagtolt allomas: petrol station on motorway
- Motoros vendeglato: motorway restaurant
Speed limit on motorways: 130 km/h.
National road direction signs
Blue rectangular signs with white text for national primary and secondary roads. Numbers with prefixes:
- M-numbers: motorways (M1, M3, M5, M6, M7)
- Numbered roads: national roads (1, 3, 4, 6, 51, etc.)
Tourist and cultural signs
Brown signs with white text indicate castles, thermal baths, wine regions, and other cultural attractions. Popular Hungarian destinations shown: Budapest thermal baths, Balaton region, wine regions of Tokaj and Eger.
E-matrica automatic camera zones
Hungary’s electronic vignette system uses camera gantries at every motorway entry and along key sections. A dedicated sign (usually blue rectangular with M-symbol and text “e-matrica” or “e-vignetta”) warns:
- Autopalya - e-matrica ellenorzes: motorway with e-matrica verification
- Fizetes utan behajthat: enter after payment
Cameras read plates against the vignette database. Non-payment triggers a 27,790 HUF fine (€76) if paid within 60 days, rising to 95,730 HUF (€260) after that. Foreign vehicles are pursued through EU cross-border debt collection.
Hungary-specific signs
Lakott terulet (built-up area)
Rectangular blue sign with city or village name in white text marks the start of a built-up area (50 km/h zone). The crossed-out version marks exit and return to 90 km/h on rural roads.
Foutvonal (priority road)
Yellow diamond with black border on white background. Marks a road with right of way at junctions. Cancelled by “foutvonal vege” (yellow diamond with diagonal bar).
Balaton area seasonal signs
Around Lake Balaton, additional signs appear from June to September for seasonal traffic management: campsite direction (kemping), swimming (strand), water sports, and boat rental.
Onalloan hasznalt orszagut
Yellow-bordered rectangular sign identifies “autonomous main road” designation - a national road with priority at unmarked junctions.
Sunday truck ban signs
Vasarnap tilos (Sunday prohibited) with hgv symbol restricts trucks over 7.5 tonnes from driving on Sundays and public holidays. Applies to entire road network.
Speed limit signs
Standard European format: white circle with red border and speed limit in km/h.
Common Hungarian limits:
- 130 km/h on motorways (autopalya)
- 110 km/h on expressways (autout)
- 90 km/h on rural roads outside built-up areas
- 50 km/h in built-up areas (lakott terulet)
- 30 km/h in residential zones (many cities including Budapest)
Speed enforcement:
- Fixed cameras (traffipax) with typical 10 km/h tolerance
- Mobile cameras in unmarked police cars
- Average speed cameras (VEDA system) on M-motorways
- Red-light cameras at major urban intersections
Overtaking and lane-use signs
- Elozes tilos: no overtaking, red circle with two cars
- Elozes tilos tehergepkocsival: no overtaking for lorries
- Elozes tilos vege: end of no-overtaking
Warning zones and roadworks
Yellow diamond-shaped signs or standard warning triangles with orange banner mark roadworks. Common:
- Utepitesi munkalatok: roadworks (A11 with orange strip)
- Terelo tabla: diversion sign (yellow arrow)
- Ideiglenes forgalomiranyitas: temporary traffic signal
- Munkageppel dolgozunk: work vehicle operating
What to do if you see a sign you don’t understand
The Vienna Convention provides shape and colour clues that work even without knowing the language:
- Red border = warning, prohibition or stop
- Blue background = mandatory instruction or information
- Green sign = motorway or motorway-related
- Yellow sign = roadworks or temporary
- Brown sign = tourism
If unsure, slow down and observe traffic behaviour or nearby signs for context.
Practical tips for foreign drivers
Twelve practical tips:
- Hungarian road signs follow Vienna Convention 1968 - almost identical to Austrian
- Motorway signs are green (like continental Europe, not blue like UK/Ireland)
- E-matrica required immediately on entering M-motorway; buy online first
- Every motorway entry has automatic camera reading your registration
- Lakott terulet blue sign: 50 km/h zone starts
- Foutvonal yellow diamond: you have priority
- Priority signs are enforced strictly at unsigned junctions
- Speed cameras enforce with roughly 10 km/h tolerance
- Sunday truck ban applies nationwide - roads are quieter for cars
- Balaton area has seasonal tourism signs summer only
- German signs common near Austrian border in west
- Direction signs: green = motorway, blue = main road, white = local, brown = tourism
