Current toll-road overview
Hungary requires an electronic vignette (e-matrica) on its M-numbered motorway and expressway network: M0 ring around Budapest, M1 to Hegyeshalom and Vienna, M3 to Debrecen and the Ukrainian border, M5 to Szeged and Serbia, M6 to Pecs, M7 to Lake Balaton, M30 to Miskolc, M35 to Debrecen, M43 to Romania, M44 to Bekescsaba and M70 to Slovenia. The system has been fully digital since 2008. There are no stickers; the licence plate is the vignette. ANPR cameras verify every passage and unpaid users face a steep fine.
The 2026 update came on 1 January with a price rise across all vehicle and vignette categories. NUSZ also introduced a new M1 regional annual vignette at 15.000 HUF (D1), covering the four counties along the M1 corridor (Pest, Fejer, Komarom-Esztergom, Gyor-Moson-Sopron), a useful cost cut for drivers who only use the M1 between Budapest and the Austrian border.

Prices are in Hungarian forints (HUF). At an exchange rate around 400 HUF per euro, the standard annual D1 vignette costs about €154. Trucks above 3,5 t use the separate per-kilometre HU-GO system.
2027 prices: not officially published as of 15 October 2026. NÚSZ typically confirms the next year’s tariff in late October or early November. The basis for the 2027 adjustment is the Hungarian KSH August inflation figure; August 2026 came in at 1.3% (KSH), implying a modest increase. The 2026 tariffs above apply until the official announcement. For trips from 2027 please check nemzetiutdij.hu.
Payment methods
The official portal is nemzetiutdij.hu (English UI, card or Apple/Google Pay). Approved resellers like e-autopalyamatrica.hu, autovignet.hu and vintrica.com sell the same product at the same price plus a small service fee. Petrol stations under the MOL, Shell, OMV and OMW brands sell vignettes at the counter, and self-service vending machines stand at the main border crossings: M1 at Hegyeshalom from Austria, M3 at Vamosszabadi from Slovakia, M5 at Roszke from Serbia, M7 at Letenye from Croatia and M30 at Tornyosnemeti from Slovakia.
The annual D1 vignette is sold from 8 December onwards for the following calendar year and is valid from 1 January until 31 January the year after, giving you a one-month grace period for the renewal. Short-term vignettes (1 day, 10 days, 30 days) start at the moment of purchase or at a chosen start date.
For trucks above 3,5 t, the satellite-based HU-GO system runs through an On-Board Unit from one of the approved toll-service providers (Eurowag, DKV, AS24 and others). Distance is logged automatically and the toll is billed per kilometre by axle count, Euro emission class and road category. Foreign hauliers register at hu-go.hu.
Foreign drivers
EU and EFTA driving licences are valid; non-EU drivers should carry an International Driving Permit. The vignette is the only road charge for a passenger car, and it is bought via the same nemzetiutdij.hu portal regardless of country of registration. The portal accepts EU and Iceland/Norway/UK plates. The vending machines at the border take card and forint cash. The e-vignette is issued within minutes.
A common mistake is to drive across the border and look for a payment booth. There are no booths on Hungarian motorways. The ANPR cameras start checking as soon as you join the M-network, so it is safer to buy before entering the motorway. If you are crossing only briefly, the 1-day option at 5.550 HUF is valid for 24 hours, not a calendar day, which is enough for most transit trips.
