Traffic peak hours in the Netherlands

  • It is busy every morning on the highways to the big cities and in the evening from the cities. The morning rush hour starts just after 6 am and lasts until 10 am. The crowds in the afternoon and in the evening start around 3 pm and last until 7 pm. On Friday it is already busy on the roads around noon.
  • In bad weather conditions, the traffic on all roads increases.

Traffic jam in the tunnel

  • Rijkswaterstaat wants to prevent congestion in tunnels. There is a greater chance of rear-end collisions when traffic jams begin. And if this causes a fire, you have a much bigger problem inside a tunnel than outside a tunnel. In the event of a fire, the tunnel fans blow the smoke and heat out of the tunnel in the direction of travel. This only works if there is no traffic jam beyond the fire, otherwise all the people in this traffic jam will end up in the smoke.
  • That is why Rijkswaterstaat stops traffic in front of the tunnel when a traffic jam begins to form. In most cases this will hardly lead to any extra delay. It doesn’t matter whether you wait in front of the tunnel or in it. It may feel illogical … you don’t see a traffic jam and you still have to stop.
