Current traffic conditions in the Netherlands
The Netherlands has one of the densest motorway networks in Europe relative to surface area: roughly 2,500 km of autosnelwegen serving 17.8 million residents, plus 7,500 km of provincial N-roads. Rijkswaterstaat manages the national autosnelwegen from five regional traffic centres (Verkeerscentrale Nederland). The NDW (Nationale Databank Wegverkeersgegevens) consolidates incident, roadworks and flow data from Rijkswaterstaat, all 12 provinces, and the larger municipalities into a single open DATEX II v3 feed.
The table below pulls live incidents from the NDW open data portal (no attribution required, free for any use), refreshed every 15 minutes. As of the most recent ingest the feed exposes around 460 active incidents nationwide, dominated by roadworks (chantiers) and vehicle obstructions, with a long tail of weather, traffic and safety messages.

| A50 Apeldoorn-Arnhem | Beekbergen | 25-40 min |
| A27 Utrecht-Almere | Everdingen | 25-40 min |
The three Randstad ring roads (A10, A12, A20) share about 40 percent of all daily Dutch congestion minutes. Their chronic under-capacity is why RWS is investing heavily in the spitsstrook (rush-hour lane) network and matrix-board dynamic speed limits: to squeeze more flow from existing tarmac.
When are jams most likely?
Dutch rush hour is Monday to Thursday 07:00 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 19:00 on the Randstad ring roads (A10, A12, A4, A2 fringes) and the long-haul A2 and A27. Friday afternoons start as early as 13:30 and last until 20:00, often 50 percent longer than Mon-Thu evenings due to the combination of work commute, weekend leisure traffic, and HGVs racing to deliver before the weekend tachograph reset.
Wednesday afternoons are famously the lightest weekday because Dutch schools finish early (traditional teacher-meeting slot). Sunday evenings 18:00-21:00 are the worst weekend traffic: coast returners plus international transit through Randstad.
The school bouwvak (mid-July to mid-August, varies by region) reduces commuter traffic noticeably; international transit traffic in the same window often more than compensates on the A1 and A2. See traffic info for the summer holiday peak calendar and Rijkswaterstaat vakantiekalender predictions.
Matrix boards: the RWS enforcement layer
Above every Dutch motorway lane the Rijkswaterstaat matrix-board system displays the current effective speed limit, lane state, and incident warnings. About 12,000 matrix boards operated centrally from three RWS Verkeerscentrale locations (Zwolle, Driebergen, Haarlem).
Common matrix displays:
- White speed number: effective speed limit for this lane (legally binding)
- Red X: lane closed, leave before the end of the X block (fine €250 for driving under)
- Yellow chevron arrow: merge required into indicated direction
- Green arrow down: lane open, normal driving
- Weather icons: rain, wind, snow warnings
Matrix boards override fixed roadside signs and are camera-enforced. Foreign drivers often miss this: the roadside 130 sign is not the effective limit if the matrix above shows 100. See road signs for the full matrix vocabulary.
Section control: the trajectcontrole network
The Netherlands runs the largest section-control (trajectcontrole) network in Europe. About 25 fixed trajectcontrole zones covering 250+ km of motorway measure your average speed between two ANPR cameras. Fines are calculated on the mean, not the peak.
Zones covered:
- A2 Utrecht-Eindhoven (multiple stretches)
- A4 The Hague-Amsterdam-Antwerp
- A10 Amsterdam ring
- A12 The Hague-Utrecht-Arnhem
- A20 Rotterdam ring
- A27 Utrecht-Breda
- A50 Eindhoven-Zwolle
- A58 Eindhoven-Breda
- A67 Eindhoven-German border
Section controls are always signposted with a yellow warning triangle plus “Traject” text. Fines follow the same fixed-scale system as normal speed cameras (see traffic fines).
Which live sources to use?
Multiple free sources cover Dutch traffic in real time, each with a different focus:
| Source | Best for | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| This page (NDW feed) | National overview of incidents | Free |
| Rijkswaterstaat verkeer.nl | Official road authority incidents | Free |
| ANWB Verkeer app | Popular consumer app, incident + speed cameras | Free |
| Flitsmeister | Crowdsourced incidents + speed cameras | Free |
| Waze | Cross-EU crowdsourced traffic | Free |
| Google Maps | Predictive congestion + navigation | Free |
| NPO Radio 1 | Voice bulletins every 30 min in peak hours | Free (radio) |
| BNR Verkeer | Continuous voice bulletins | Free (radio) |
| NDW Open Data | Raw JSON feed for developers | Free (CC0) |
The ANWB Verkeer app is the most complete consumer tool: real-time NDW incidents plus fixed and mobile speed camera locations (legal to know in the Netherlands). For camper drivers: it also has bridge-open warnings and Milieuzone entry alerts.
Weather-triggered closures
Several NL road corridors close automatically during severe weather:
- Zeelandbrug (5 km bridge over Oosterschelde): closes for high vehicles at KNMI code oranje wind. Full closure at code rood
- Van Brienenoordbrug (Rotterdam ring): campers, trucks banned at code oranje wind. Full closure code rood
- Prins Willem-Alexander Bridge (Betuweroute): high-vehicle restrictions at code oranje
- A6 Ketelbrug and Houtribdijk: cross-wind warnings on IJsselmeer/Markermeer traversals
- Coastal defences: storm surge barriers close during code oranje flood warnings
KNMI issues code oranje/rood alerts 24-48 hours in advance; RWS activates closure plans automatically. Follow the ANWB app for live status.
What to do if you get stuck in a jam
The Netherlands has a legal emergency-vehicle corridor rule (sleepvak): if motorway traffic slows below walking pace, drivers in lane 1 (leftmost) must move as far left as possible, lane 2 traffic as far right as possible, so emergency vehicles can pass in between. Failure to do so is a €250 fine. Turn on hazard lights immediately when you join the back of a queue to warn following drivers; tailgating in stop-and-go traffic is the single biggest cause of secondary collisions.
If you stop on the hard shoulder: use the 112 emergency button, get out of the vehicle on the passenger side, wear a hi-vis vest (recommended not required in NL, see driving rules), and stand behind the crash barrier. The ANWB Wegenwacht (088-269 2888) is the default Dutch breakdown service; non-members pay around €200 for a roadside callout, members pay nothing (see emergency numbers for the full contact list).
Quick check before departure
A pre-departure checklist that avoids 80 percent of Dutch traffic frustrations:
- Check the live incident table above (NDW national overview)
- Cross-check ANWB Verkeer app for user-reported conditions
- Check KNMI (knmi.nl) for storm warnings that may close bridges
- If travelling into or out of Amsterdam: verify Milieuzone entry status at wagenparkstatus.nl (see low-emission zones)
- If using Westerscheldetunnel or Zeelandbrug: verify toll payment (see toll roads)
- Note your matrix-board reading first, always overrides the roadside sign
Most Randstad diversions add 20 to 45 minutes; A2 or A12 gridlock can easily cost 60 to 90 minutes during peak. Fridays 15:00-18:00 in mid-July and August (summer holiday peak Fridays) can add 3-6 hours. Consider train instead if driving through Randstad in peak hours; intercity trains run every 15-30 min between the four cities.
