Peak traffic hours
Weekdays: Two documented ANWB Top-10 chokepoints for 2024. Morning peak: Zevenaar-Duiven westbound (from German border toward Arnhem) at position 2 nationally, driven by German commuter and freight traffic entering via BAB 3. Evening peak: Nieuwegein-Oudenrijn westbound (Ring Utrecht toward Den Haag) at position 7 nationally.
Holiday periods: Cross-border transit corridor between the German Ruhr area and the Netherlands. Freight traffic constant; passenger traffic peaks during German school-holiday change-over weeks and around long weekends when Ruhr residents drive to the Dutch coast (though Dutch-coast traffic more often uses A1/A2/A30 than A12 directly).
Incident pattern on the A12
Two dominant clusters. First: Zevenaar-Duiven (A12 x A15/A18) at the eastern end, where inbound German traffic funnels through the last stretch before Arnhem. This segment was ranked #1 in the ANWB national morning-peak Top-10 for 2023 and #2 for 2024, driven by structural cross-border commuter and freight flow. Second: Ring Utrecht westbound (Nieuwegein-Oudenrijn) at the western end of the province, part of a broader A27/A12 Ring Utrecht bottleneck that was the subject of a major widening project. The Ring Utrecht widening was legally blocked in March 2026 when the Council of State (Raad van State) annulled the trace decision on nitrogen-emission grounds. Structural relief is therefore not currently in prospect.
Alternative routes
- A28 via Amersfoort-Zwolle (northern arc for Randstad-east traffic): For traffic between the Randstad and northeastern Netherlands or northern Germany, the A28 offers an alternative that avoids the Ring Utrecht westbound bottleneck. Adds distance for Arnhem-bound trips but useful during A12 Utrecht major maintenance.
- A15 via Rotterdam-Nijmegen (southern parallel to A12): For freight bound for the German border, the A15 runs parallel to the south and often carries lower peak density than A12 Zevenaar-Duiven. Useful when Zevenaar-Duiven is congested.
- Off-peak timing: The A12 peak pattern follows commuter and freight rhythms. Shifting travel outside 07:00-09:00 westbound near Utrecht and outside the morning cross-border peak at Zevenaar-Duiven removes most delay without any detour.
2026 construction outlook
- Major maintenance A12 Den Haag-Nieuwerbrug: running August 2025 through June 2027 per Rijkswaterstaat project page. Expect recurring lane restrictions and night closures on the western section.
- Major maintenance A12 Lunetten-Veenendaal: 60 km of asphalt replacement in progress per Rijkswaterstaat, with 2025 long-duration closures documented (9-19 May and 22 August-1 September 2025).
- Ring Utrecht widening (A27/A12): trace decision legally annulled by the Raad van State in March 2026 on nitrogen-emission grounds. Structural relief for the Ring Utrecht bottleneck is not currently in prospect.
- Zevenaar-Oost junction reconfiguration: in construction since August 2026 per Rijkswaterstaat announcement.
Practical tips
- Clarification for German drivers: the Dutch A12 (Den Haag-Emmerich, 137 km) is NOT the German BAB 12 (Berlin-Frankfurt/Oder, 58 km, eastern Germany). Two different roads. After the Elten/Emmerich border crossing, the Dutch A12 continues as the German BAB 3, which then runs Oberhausen-Cologne-Frankfurt-Passau (778 km total, one of Germany's busiest motorways).
- The A12 begins in central Den Haag on the Utrechtsebaan, which is technically an autoweg (city arterial) with 70 km/h limit and no hard shoulder, not a full motorway. The motorway section starts near Voorburg. Search results and satnav may treat the Utrechtsebaan as part of the A12 corridor even though it operates under different rules.
- Since 2020 the daytime speed limit on Dutch motorways is 100 km/h between 06:00 and 19:00. Between 19:00 and 06:00 the posted maximum applies where signed. Per Rijkswaterstaat.
- Rush-hour lanes (spitsstroken) are active on segments near Zoetermeer, Woerden, Gouda, Veenendaal, Ede, the Prins Clausplein junction, and Voorburg. These add capacity during peaks under electronic matrix-board control.
- The A12 is the oldest motorway in the Netherlands: the first segment (Voorburg-Zoetermeer) opened on 15 April 1937.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the A12 between Den Haag (Utrechtsebaan) and the German border at Elten/Emmerich, continuing as BAB 3 toward Oberhausen and the Ruhr area congested?
The Netherlands' oldest motorway (first segment opened 1937), 137 km. Randstad-Ruhr cross-border artery: Zevenaar-Duiven inbound from Germany was ranked #2 in the national morning-peak ANWB Top-10 for 2024 (up from #1 in 2023). Continues into Germany as BAB 3 (not any Dutch A-road) toward Oberhausen and Cologne. E30/E25/E35 European route on different segments.. The corridor passes through Zuid-Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland and serves Den Haag, Zoetermeer, Gouda.
When are the worst traffic hours on the A12 in 2026?
Two documented ANWB Top-10 chokepoints for 2024. Morning peak: Zevenaar-Duiven westbound (from German border toward Arnhem) at position 2 nationally, driven by German commuter and freight traffic entering via BAB 3. What alternative routes can I take to avoid the A12?
A28 via Amersfoort-Zwolle (northern arc for Randstad-east traffic): For traffic between the Randstad and northeastern Netherlands or northern Germany, the A28 offers an alternative that avoids the Ring Utrecht westbound bottleneck. Adds distance for Arnhem-bound trips but useful during A12 Utrecht major maintenance. A15 via Rotterdam-Nijmegen (southern parallel to A12): For freight bound for the German border, the A15 runs parallel to the south and often carries lower peak density than A12 Zevenaar-Duiven. Useful when Zevenaar-Duiven is congested. Off-peak timing: The A12 peak pattern follows commuter and freight rhythms. Shifting travel outside 07:00-09:00 westbound near Utrecht and outside the morning cross-border peak at Zevenaar-Duiven removes most delay without any detour.
Are there ongoing roadworks on the A12 in 2026?
