Peak traffic hours
Weekdays: Commuter congestion between Geldrop and Eindhoven mixes with international freight per Rijkswaterstaat. The Leenderheide-Geldrop stretch is identified in the MIRT project scope as the primary bottleneck target. A67 does not appear in the ANWB Filezwaarte Top-10 for 2024 (annual, morning-peak, or evening-peak lists), so structural congestion is real but does not rank among the ten heaviest A-road jams nationally.
Holiday periods: Constant heavy-freight base-load between the port of Antwerp, the port of Rotterdam (via A67-A2-A16 combinations) and the German Ruhr area. Freight-driven pattern is less peaked than commuter corridors: transit volume stays high on weekends and during German school-holiday change-over weeks.
Incident pattern on the A67
Three structural pinch points documented by Rijkswaterstaat and the MIRT project scope. First: knooppunt Leenderheide (A2 x A67), the eastern end of the Randweg Eindhoven A2-A67 concurrency, cited as the western anchor of the paused widening plan. Second: the Leenderheide-Geldrop-Someren-Asten-Deurne stretch, a 2x2-lane cross-section carrying a commuter-plus-freight mix. Third: knooppunt Zaarderheiken (A73 x A67) at Venlo, cited as the eastern anchor of the widening plan. The A67 has NO rush-hour lanes (spitsstroken) anywhere per Rijkswaterstaat, so no matrix-board flex capacity is available when incidents occur: expect longer clear-times than on comparable A-roads with spitsstroken.
Alternative routes
- A73 + A74 via Venlo (for BAB 61 traffic bound for Monchengladbach or Cologne): Traffic between the Randstad and the Monchengladbach or Cologne direction should route via A73 to Venlo and then via the short A74 to German BAB 61, NOT via the A67. The A67 continues as BAB 40 toward Duisburg and Dortmund only.
- A58 + A50 via Eindhoven (northern arc from the Belgian border): For traffic between the Antwerp area and Nijmegen or the northern Netherlands, the Belgian E313-A58-A50 combination via Turnhout and Eindhoven avoids the A67 Leenderheide-Geldrop 2x2 stretch. Adds distance.
- Off-peak timing: Commuter peaks on the A67 concentrate between Geldrop and Eindhoven. Freight is present all day. For non-commuter passenger traffic, shifting outside typical morning and evening peak hours removes most delay through the Leenderheide junction area.
2026 construction outlook
- MIRT project 'A67 verbeteren veiligheid en doorstroming Leenderheide-Zaarderheiken' (widening Leenderheide-Geldrop): PAUSED per Rijkswaterstaat project page. Per the MIRT-brief of 13 November 2023 this project was placed on hold together with sixteen other road and waterway projects. Realization is planned 'after opening of the A58 Tilburg-Eindhoven'; no new start date set.
- Recurring maintenance closures documented in Rijkswaterstaat news 2025-2026, including night closures Panningen-German border (22-26 June 2026), the four-day full closure between the Belgian border and Eindhoven (28 April to 1 May 2026), and Panningen-Leenderheide closures (1-5 December 2025). Check Rijkswaterstaat for current work windows before travel.
Practical tips
- The Dutch A67 runs from the Belgian border west of Eersel to the German border east of Venlo, 78 km total per Rijkswaterstaat. On the Belgian side it continues as A21 (E34) toward Antwerp (last Belgian exit at Arendonk). On the German side it continues as BAB 40 toward Krefeld, Duisburg, Essen and Dortmund, NOT as BAB 61. The German BAB 61 (Monchengladbach-Cologne direction) is reached via the Dutch A73 and the short A74 south of Venlo, not directly from the A67.
- Between knooppunt De Hogt and knooppunt Leenderheide the A67 shares the roadway with the A2 on the Randweg Eindhoven per Rijkswaterstaat. Both De Hogt (west) and Leenderheide (east) are junctions where the A2 and A67 meet: signage refers to both roads, which can confuse first-time drivers routing through Eindhoven.
- Since March 2020 the daytime speed limit on Dutch motorways is 100 km/h between 06:00 and 19:00, applying to the full A67. Between 19:00 and 06:00 the posted maximum applies (up to 130 km/h where signed). In 2025 the government raised the daytime maximum back to 130 km/h on a few specific stretches per Rijksoverheid; A67 is NOT among them.
- The A67 has NO rush-hour lanes (spitsstroken) anywhere per Rijkswaterstaat. When incidents occur there is no matrix-board flex capacity to open a shoulder lane, so expect longer clear-times than on comparable A-roads with spitsstroken.
- The A67 was NOT in the ANWB Filezwaarte Top-10 for 2024 (annual, morning-peak, or evening-peak lists). Structural congestion is documented by Rijkswaterstaat on the Leenderheide-Geldrop stretch but does not rank among the ten heaviest A-road jams nationally.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the A67 between Belgian border west of Eersel (continues as Belgian A21 / E34 toward Antwerp) via Eindhoven and Venlo and the German border east of Venlo (continues as German BAB 40 toward Duisburg and Dortmund). Between knooppunt De Hogt and knooppunt Leenderheide the A67 runs concurrent with the A2 on the Randweg Eindhoven. congested?
Randstad-Ruhr freight corridor via Antwerp, 78 km per Rijkswaterstaat. Two structural pinch points: knooppunt Leenderheide (A2 x A67) at Eindhoven and knooppunt Zaarderheiken (A73 x A67) at Venlo. Carries European route E34 along its full length. Planned Leenderheide-Geldrop widening was PAUSED by the national government in November 2023 per Rijkswaterstaat. A67 does NOT appear in the ANWB Filezwaarte Top-10 for 2024 (annual, morning, or evening lists).. The corridor passes through Noord-Brabant, Limburg and serves Eersel, Eindhoven, Geldrop.
