The Polish EV market in 2026
Poland is the fastest-growing EV market in Central Europe. Battery-electric cars now make up about 5% of new car sales (2025 figure), up from 1.5% in 2022, driven by the Moj Elektryk subsidy program (up to PLN 27,000 off a new BEV), EU AFIR corridor mandate, and a rapidly expanding network from GreenWay, Orlen Charge and Tauron.
About 100,000 BEVs and 60,000 PHEVs are on the road. The PSNM (formerly PSPA) target is 200,000 public charge points by 2030. Today there are about 45,000 publicly accessible points, broken down as:
- 40,700 AC chargers (Type 2, 3-22 kW), most in cities and at retail parks
- 3,200 DC fast chargers (50-150 kW)
- 1,100 ultra-rapid HPC (150-350 kW)
- 5 hydrogen filling stations (small but growing network)
Where the network is densest
For EV roadtrip planning, Poland divides into three coverage tiers:
- Tier 1 (densest): Warszawa, Krakow, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk-Sopot-Gdynia (Tricity), and the A2 corridor. Average 30-50 km between HPC sites.
- Tier 2 (good): Lodz, Katowice-Slesia, Bydgoszcz, Torun, Lublin, Szczecin, A4 / A1 / S7 / S8 corridors. Average 60-90 km between HPC.
- Tier 3 (thinner): Eastern Poland (Podlasie, Lubelskie, Podkarpackie), the Bieszczady mountains, smaller national roads. 100-150 km between fast chargers in places.
Strategy for a visitor: any trip on a motorway or expressway is trivial. Trips on secondary roads in Tier 3 areas need planning: install GreenWay and Tesla apps + use ABRP routing.
Major networks
| Network | Sites | Connector mix | Typical tariff (PLN/kWh) |
|---|---|---|---|
| GreenWay | 5,000+ | AC + DC + HPC | 1.50 AC, 2.50 DC |
| Orlen Charge | 1,200+ | DC + HPC at petrol stations | 2.50-3.50 |
| Tauron eMobility | 800+ | AC + DC | 1.40 AC, 2.40 DC |
| Energa Charge | 600+ | AC + DC | 1.50 AC, 2.50 DC |
| Lotos Charge | 400+ | DC at petrol stations | 2.80-3.50 |
| Tesla Supercharger | 35+ | CCS (open to non-Tesla) | 2.20-2.80 (non-Tesla) |
| Ionity | 15+ | Ultra-rapid CCS | 3.90 (no subscription) |
| GO+EAuto | 350+ | AC + DC roaming | 1.60 AC, 2.60 DC |
| Innogy/E.ON (Polska) | 200+ | AC + DC | 1.50 AC, 2.60 DC |
GreenWay is the clear network leader after consolidating multiple smaller operators. Orlen Charge is the biggest petrol-station play, leveraging the Orlen network of 1,800+ filling stations. Tauron and Energa are the regional utility operators.
Payment methods
Four routes, all valid:
- Contactless credit/debit card at the terminal. Mandatory under EU AFIR on every new charger above 50 kW. Visa, Mastercard, AMEX, Apple Pay, Google Pay all work. Polish operators have implemented this faster than many EU peers.
- Operator app: GreenWay, Orlen Charge, Tauron eMobility, Tesla, Energa Charge. Live availability + payment + history.
- Roaming RFID card: EnBW mobility+, Plugsurfing, Chargemap Pass, Shell Recharge. One card across operators at the issuer’s pricing.
- Ad-hoc QR code: scan, pay via webform. About PLN 0.20-0.40/kWh more than app pricing.
For a 1-2 week visit, the simplest combo is your home roaming card (EnBW mobility+ for German visitors, Plugsurfing for most others) plus contactless credit card as backup. Add the free GreenWay app to bypass surcharges at the largest national network.
Cost: EV vs ICE in Poland
Comparison for a typical 500 km trip in a Hyundai IONIQ 5 (78 kWh battery, real-world 18 kWh/100km) vs a comparable petrol crossover (real-world 7.5 l/100km at PLN 6.50/litre):
| Charging strategy | Energy needed | Cost (PLN) | Cost (EUR) | Per km (EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home overnight (off-peak PLN 0.60) | 90 kWh | 54.00 | 12.45 | 0.025 |
| AC kerbside GreenWay (PLN 1.50) | 90 kWh | 135.00 | 31.13 | 0.062 |
| DC fast 80% of charge (PLN 2.50) | 72 kWh | 180.00 | 41.50 | 0.083 |
| HPC Ionity (PLN 3.90) | 90 kWh | 351.00 | 80.93 | 0.162 |
| Tesla SC non-Tesla (PLN 2.50) | 90 kWh | 225.00 | 51.88 | 0.104 |
| Petrol (PLN 6.50/l) | 37.5 l | 243.75 | 56.21 | 0.112 |
At those figures: using DC fast or Tesla SC, the BEV is roughly cost-neutral with petrol in Poland; with home or AC kerbside the BEV is 2-4x cheaper. Ionity is competitive only with subscription.
The tariffs and the pump price in this table are the figures reviewed on 2026-08-10; both move, so read the ranking rather than the absolute amounts.
Roaming apps explained
GreenWay
The free app from Poland’s largest network. Works at 5,000+ GreenWay points across all coverage tiers, no subscription needed. Pricing: PLN 1.50/kWh AC, PLN 2.50/kWh DC, PLN 3.20/kWh HPC. Best for any visitor planning more than one GreenWay stop.
Orlen Charge
App from the Orlen petrol-station operator. Best coverage on motorways and major expressways. Pricing: PLN 2.50-3.50/kWh DC depending on power, with loyalty programme (Vitay) giving 5-10% discount. The Orlen network operates 1,200+ EV sites at filling stations.
Tauron eMobility
Tauron is one of Poland’s largest electricity utilities. Their eMobility app has 800+ sites concentrated in southern Poland (Krakow, Katowice, Wroclaw). Pricing slightly cheaper than GreenWay on AC.

Special cases: hotels, malls, P+R
- Hotels: most international chains in Warszawa, Krakow and Wroclaw have AC chargers for guests. Best coverage: Mercure, Novotel, Hilton, Marriott, Hampton by Hilton, Premier Inn. Booking.com filter “EV charger” surfaces them.
- Shopping malls: Galeria Krakowska, Manufaktura (Lodz), Galeria Mokotow (Warszawa), Westfield Mokotow, Stary Browar (Poznan), Galeria Bronowice (Krakow) all have multiple AC points; often free or low-cost for customers with a minimum purchase.
- P+R: Warszawa (P+R Marymont, P+R Mlociny, P+R Ursus), Krakow (P+R Bronowice, P+R Czerwone Maki), Wroclaw and Gdansk all have reserved EV bays. Usually free or PLN 5-10/day with a public-transport ticket.
- Workplaces: Polish corporate fleets increasingly cover guest charging. Ask at reception.
Winter charging in Poland
Polish winters can be cold: -10 to -20C in central Poland, occasionally colder in the east (Suwalki triangle, Bieszczady). Effects:
- Range reduction: typical 20-30% lost vs summer figures.
- DC charging speed: cold battery throttles charge. Pre-condition the battery via the nav route planner; expect 5-10 minutes longer at the HPC for the same SoC gain.
- Salt and slush: charging ports can accumulate ice; keep the charger flap clear.
Strategy: in winter (December-February) plan stops every 150 km on long trips rather than 200-250 km. Most major Polish HPC sites have indoor/covered facilities.
Charging speeds by car
Approximate peak DC fast charging speeds at a 350 kW HPC station for typical 2024-2026 models:
| Car | Peak kW | 10-80% time |
|---|---|---|
| Porsche Taycan | 270 | 18 min |
| Hyundai IONIQ 5/6, Kia EV6 | 235 | 18 min |
| Mercedes EQS | 200 | 22 min |
| BMW iX | 195 | 22 min |
| Tesla Model 3 LR | 250 | 20 min |
| Tesla Model Y | 170 | 28 min |
| VW ID.4/ID.5, Audi Q4 e-tron | 170 | 28 min |
| Skoda Enyaq / Cupra Born | 135 | 32 min |
| Renault Megane E-Tech | 130 | 32 min |
| Mini Cooper SE | 70 | 35 min |
Many older EVs (2018-2019) are capped at 50 kW even at HPC sites. Check your car’s owner manual.
Practical tips for visiting EV drivers
- Install GreenWay + Orlen Charge + Tesla + EnBW mobility+ before crossing the border. Together these cover 90% of Polish HPC sites.
- Use A Better Route Planner (ABRP) or Google Maps EV routing for any trip over 200 km, especially in eastern Poland.
- Bring your own Type 2 cable for kerbside and hotel charging.
- Contactless credit card is your fallback at every newer station (EU AFIR mandate, in force since 2024).
- Polish electricity is moderately priced; if your hotel has an AC charger, use it overnight rather than fast charging in the morning.
- LEZ (Strefa Czystego Transportu) in Warszawa requires the appropriate environmental sticker; BEVs are always allowed.
- Tesla Superchargers are open to all CCS2 cars in Poland since 2023.
