⚡ Short answer

Polish motorways are free for cars since 2023 except three concession sections: A1 AmberOne Gdansk-Torun 29,90 PLN, A2 Wielkopolska Swiecko-Konin 138 PLN, A4 Stalexport Katowice-Krakow 36 PLN. Pay at booths (cash/card) or via AmberGO / Autopay / A4Go apps. Trucks (>3,5 t) use e-TOLL.

Current toll-road overview

Driving a car on Polish motorways is free in 2026 with three exceptions. Since 1 July 2023 the Polish government has abolished tolls for cars (passenger cars up to 3,5 t and motorbikes) on every state-managed motorway and on every expressway (S-road). That includes the A2 Konin-Strykow stretch, the entire A4 east of Krakow, the A1 north of the AmberOne section, the whole A6, A8, A18 and so on. Three private concession sections, awarded before this reform, continue to charge cars until their concession contracts expire.

The three remaining tolled sections in 2026 are: the A1 AmberOne (Gdansk Transport Company, 152 km from Rusocin to Nowa Wies), the A2 Autostrada Wielkopolska (Swiecko-Konin, about 250 km) and the A4 Stalexport (Katowice-Krakow, 61 km from Myslowice to Balice). The A4 concession ends on 15 March 2027 and the route then becomes free for cars; the A2 Wielkopolska concession runs until 2037.

Trucks and buses above 3,5 t are a separate story: they use the nationwide e-TOLL system (launched 1 July 2021, replaced viaTOLL), which covers all motorways, expressways and many national roads.

Payment methods

At the three concession plazas you can use cash (Polish zloty plus euro or US dollar notes up to 100; change is returned in PLN), bank cards (Visa, Mastercard, Maestro), contactless and fleet cards. All three operators run videotolling: AmberGO on the AmberOne A1, Autopay on the A2 Wielkopolska, and both A4Go and Autopay on the A4 Stalexport. Linked apps include SkyCash and the major Polish bank apps; an installed Telepass OBU is also recognised by AmberGO.

The e-TOLL system for trucks works either via an OBU (the operator approves a list of compatible devices) or via the e-TOLL Pro mobile app. Registration is at etoll.gov.pl and works for foreign hauliers with a foreign card.

Foreign drivers

EU and EFTA driving licences are valid; non-EU drivers should carry an International Driving Permit. Foreign cards work at every concession plaza. Cars need no advance registration. Coming from Germany via the A12 / A2 the first paid kilometre is at the Swiecko plaza right after the border; coming from the Czech border via the D1 / A1 you reach the AmberOne section only at Nowa Wies, well north of the border. Trucks must register e-TOLL before crossing the border at etoll.gov.pl. Cash payment with euro notes is accepted at all three concession operators, with change returned in zloty.

Car drivers pay only at the three concession sections above and otherwise drive Polish motorways for free.

They often run parallel to the tolled A1, A2 or A4 sections and are an easy free alternative.
