Particularities
When importing more than 200 cigarettes, the packaging must bear a health warning in German. This is especially true at national borders.
Import of pets
- Austria is a dog-friendly country. There are numerous guesthouses, holiday homes and hotels where you can stay with a dog. A dog is also welcome at most campsites, on the condition that he remains on a leash so as not to disturb fellow visitors.
- Dogs are not welcome on the recreational beaches around lakes. However, there are plenty of other places to be found where you can enter the water with your dog.
- From March to May, when the game is young, dogs must be kept on a lead in the woods.
- A dog is allowed inside restaurants, unless stated otherwise.
Identification
- A dog or cat needs an EU pet passport, available from the vet. This passport contains a description of the animal, the name and address of the owner, the registration number of the chip (standard ISO microchip 11784/11785 is inserted) and proof of vaccination against rabies. There is also room in the passport for a health certificate and other treatments or vaccinations.
Health
- Dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies (rabies vaccination) at least 21 days before the trip. The period of validity depends on the guidelines of the vaccine manufacturer (1-3 years).
- Note: The chip must be inserted before the vaccination against rabies (on the same day).
- No mandatory additional treatments are required in Austria.
- Dogs and cats do not have to be quarantined in Austria.
- Austria is not a risk area, but a dog or cat can still get sick during the holiday as a result of tick or insect bites. There are sufficient preventive measures. Contact the vet about this at least 4 weeks before departure.
- There are red warning signs in rabies areas.
- Note: In Austria, blue poison is put in bait to kill badgers and martens. Take your dog to the vet immediately after it has eaten.
Forbidden dogs
- Certain dog breeds are not banned in Austria.
Pets and transport
- The dog must be on a leash and muzzled in public transport.
- Small dogs can travel for free, for large dogs you pay half money, also in the cable car.
- The Austrian government has no specific rules for the transport of a dog or cat in the car. In general, you are not allowed to transport a pet in the car in such a way that this leads or can lead to dangerous situations or traffic nuisance.
Young animals
- A puppy or kitten under three months of age does not need to be vaccinated against rabies when accompanied by the mother on whom it is still dependent or there must be a written statement from the veterinarian that the puppy has been raised in the place of birth until travel and has not been in contact with animals that may have been infected with rabies.
- In all other cases applies: all puppies and kittens that are taken to Austria must be vaccinated against rabies. Vaccination is only possible from 12 weeks. The legal withdrawal period after vaccination is 21 days, which means that animals younger than 15 weeks may no longer be imported.
Particularities
- A maximum of 5 dogs may be taken to Austria.
- Also remember to check the rules of the countries you travel through to Austria.
