Spanish climate overview

Spain has the most diverse climate of any single European country. Five distinct zones interact across the peninsula plus the Canary Islands.

Mediterranean coast (Catalonia, Valencia, Murcia, Andalusia coast, Balearic Islands)

Hot summers (28-35C), mild winters (12-18C). Rain mostly autumn (October-November) and spring (March-April). Summer drought common. Sea moderates extremes. Best populated tourist routes (AP-7, A-7) sit here.

Interior meseta (Madrid, Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, much of Andalusia interior)

Continental extremes. Summers 35-45C with low humidity. Winters cold (-5 to 5C). Low rainfall (400-500 mm). Big day-night temperature swings (15-20C). The most heat-stressed driving environment in Europe.

Atlantic NW (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country)

Maritime, cool. Summers 18-25C, winters 5-12C. Very wet (1.500-2.500 mm/year). Fog frequent autumn-spring. Foliage like northern France. Distinct from southern Spain in every weather sense.

Pyrenees (Catalonia, Aragon, Navarra mountains)

Alpine influence. Summers 15-20C in valleys, snow possible all year at altitude. Winters severe (-10 to 0C, deep snow). Ski season Dec-April. Pass roads closed Dec-March at altitude.

Canary Islands (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura)

Subtropical. Year-round 18-28C. Variable rain by island; eastern islands very dry, western islands wetter. Trade winds dominant.

Best months by activity

General touring (cities, coast, museums)

  • Best: April-June, September-October. Mild, fewer tourists, pleasant for walking.
  • Good: late March, early November. Cooler but pleasant.
  • Avoid: July-August for interior driving (heat); peak season for coast.

Coast (Costa Brava, Costa del Sol, Balearic, Canarias)

  • Best: June, September. Warm sea (22-26C), fewer crowds than peak summer.
  • Good: May, October.

Pyrenees skiing (Baqueira-Beret, Formigal, Cerler)

  • Best: January-March. Snow guaranteed at altitude.
  • Reasonable: December, early April depending on snow.

Camino de Santiago (walking + driving the route)

  • Best: May-June, September. Pleasant temperatures, low rain.
  • Avoid: November-February (wet, cold in Galicia).

Andalusia winter touring

  • Best: October-April. Mild (15-22C), low rain. December-January warm winter sun escapes.

Heat (verano caluroso)

The meseta and southern Spain see Europe’s most extreme summer heat. AEMET issues yellow (aviso amarillo), orange (naranja) and red (rojo) heat warnings.

Code red days (40C+ widespread):

  • Avoid 12:00-19:00 driving if possible
  • Double water budget per person
  • Air conditioning servicing essential
  • Asphalt-softening 80 km/h limits on some A-roads in extreme heat
  • Wildfire-risk road closures Andalusia, Catalonia, Extremadura

Hottest stretches: A-4 Madrid-Cordoba-Sevilla, A-5 Madrid-Badajoz, A-92 Granada-Almeria. Coast (AP-7) is bearable due to sea breeze.

Winter conditions

In the south (Mediterranean coast, Andalusia coast), winter driving is essentially summer-conditions: 12-18C, dry, no special equipment needed.

In the interior meseta, winters can drop to -5C with occasional snow. Madrid sees 1-3 snow days/year; Filomena (Jan 2021) was an exception with 50 cm closing the city.

In the Pyrenees, winter is severe. Pass roads (N-260, N-145, GR-15) close November-April. Skiing the norm. M+S or chains required on snow alerts. Pirineos catalanes get 2-4 m snow at 2.000 m elevation.

In Atlantic NW (Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria), winters are wet and mild. Snow at coast rare. Mountain interior (Picos de Europa) gets snow.

Atlantic Galicia + Cantabrian coast

The Atlantic NW is Spain’s wettest region:

  • Galicia: 1.500-2.500 mm/year, 150+ rain days. Fog frequent.
  • Asturias: 1.000-1.500 mm/year, cliff roads slippery in rain.
  • Cantabria: similar, with Picos de Europa mountains adding snow at altitude.
  • Basque Country: 1.200-1.800 mm/year, sirimiri (drizzle) constant.

For driving: AP-9 (Galicia), A-8 (Cantabrian coast), AP-66 (Asturias-Leon) all rain-affected. Headlights on always in this zone autumn-spring.

Gota fria (cold drop) and east-coast flash floods

The Mediterranean east coast (Valencia, Murcia) experiences gota fria storms typically September-November. Cold upper-atmosphere air meets warm Mediterranean water; result is intense rain (200+ mm in 24h possible). Floods Valencia hinterland and southern Catalonia. October 2024 DANA killed 230+ in Valencia.

Warning: stay off roads in red flood alert. Wadis (ramblas) fill rapidly. Drive slowly through standing water; abandoned cars frequent.

Apps and resources

  • El Tiempo: most popular consumer portal (eltiempo.es)
  • DGT app: traffic plus weather-related closures
  • RACE: equivalent of ANWB/ADAC, weather alerts via app
  • Windy: international, excellent for wind
  • Meteored: regional Spanish coverage

Practical tips

  • Carry water in summer even for short drives.
  • Sunglasses essential; Spanish sun intensity highest in Europe.
  • Plan interior summer driving for 06:00-11:00 and 19:00-22:00.
  • Pyrenees winter: chains in the boot Nov-Apr; check DGT for “uso obligatorio”.
  • Galicia: rain gear year-round.
  • Air conditioning: confirm it works before crossing the meseta in July-August.

No, winter tyres are not legally required nationwide. However, in mountain provinces (Asturias, Leon, Cantabria, Aragon Pyrenees, Catalonia Pyrenees, Granada Sierra Nevada), regional authorities can require chains or M+S during snow alerts.
